4. Digital Etiquette

The digital etiquette is an appropriate behavior in the social media (Digital Citizenship Module Manual, 2016:84). The lack of behavior which causes problems to the cyber users is identity theft, cyberbullying, hacking and exposing other peoples’ privacy. These inappropriate behaviors are harassing the cyber users which is unfair because some cyber users won’t be comfortable enough to use their computers and some won’t even have a knowledge to operate it because of their disadvantage backgrounds.
The inappropriate behaviours is mostly likely abusing your power (Digital Citizenship Module Manual, 2016:90) to someone else who is vulnerable with feelings and not doing some action in the social media. Offensive language is not seen as a digital etiquette because it needs the corrective language that needs to be spoken online or in the social media so that the cyber users can be comfortable to each other (Digital Citizenship Module Manual, 2016:90). These cyber users also be traumatized to be online forever either because of the privacy of their picture has been exposed online or certain groups of cyber users are attacking this one user with harsh words online.
Cyberbullying is there to target the innocent victims that uses the social media. Most of the research it has showed that it happens mostly on young people that uses the social media online. Cyberbullying has certain sub categories as well such as cyber harassment or cyber stalking of constantly talking to the victim against their will (Kidshealth, 2017). Even if cyberbullying happens in social media, it has a legal consequence which is regarded as crime which can land you in jail. This also includes also exposing another person’s privacy against their will which exposure mostly happens with images (Kidshealth, 2017).
Identity theft is a having another person’s information to get a benefit from that person’s identity or getting that financial advantage (Searchsecurity,2017). Driver’s license for example can be used by those cyber criminals so that they can drive according in your name which they drive recklessly because they know that this is not their identity (Searchsecurity,2017). ID is another issue because when the criminals are doing a criminal activity of flying over with an aeroplane with another person’s ID which is dangerous for the victim’s record of crime which these crimes are caused by finding the victims personal pictures online in social media (Searchsecurity,2017).
These are the guidelines that will help you to have a digital etiquette:
·         Respect other people’s privacy: Do not expose other people’s privacy
·         Do not abuse your power:  Use your power to share knowledge and protecting other users
·         Be forgiving other people’s mistakes: The more you forgive, the more there will be peace and less tensions in the social media online.
·         Make yourself look good online: Use appropriative language and grammar that will make online users to respect you.
·         Remember the human: Even though we don’t see each other through social media most of the times besides video calls, remember harsh words can hurt the human emotions and feelings which this human being can see the text.
·         Help flame wars under control: If you are in the middle of tensions then always find a way to apologise so that peace can be restored with that angry user.
